New Year’s Resolutions for Better Posture

Americans have notoriously bad posture, as just about any chiropractor can tell you. Sit Better

If you have a sedentary job and you spend a lot of time sitting down, try to sit better. Invest in a good, ergonomic posture office chair. Find one that is suited for your body, is at the right height for your desk, and will provide the right kind of support for your back.

Try Standing Instead

You can also try standing at work instead of sitting. This can be a big change in not just your posture, but your overall health. Did you know that you will burn almost 10% more calories throughout the day just from working while standing? You’d be amazed at just how affordable a standing desk is, too!

Try a Balance Ball

Sitting on a balance ball can be a great way to improve your posture and build your core muscles at the same time. It takes a bit to get the hang of it, but you’ll notice the difference fast. It’s even better if you can switch off between your ergonomic office chair and the balance ball as the day goes on, maybe just using the balance ball for about 20 minutes at a time at first.

Wear the Right Shoes

It cannot be understated how much of an effect your footwear will have on your posture. If you spend all day on your feet, the wrong shoes will change your center of gravity, which will affect everything else in your body, including your spinal alignment. High heels look great, but they’re very bad for your posture in the long run.

Avoid Crossing Your Legs

This might be a stunning one to a lot of people. We’re taught from an early age that crossing your legs is not only comfortable, but respectable. What we’re not taught is that it places a lot of strain on the joints and muscles. Sit with your feet flat on the ground if you can.
