Study Shows Chiropractic Adjustments Can Help With ADHD Symptoms

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a diagnosable psychological disorder that tends to onset during adolescence and present symptoms throughout the rest of the child’s life. The symptoms of the disorder cause children, teens, and adults to have trouble focusing, to be prone to impulsive behavior and to have bursts of hyperactivity that are difficult to control.

Psychologists recommend therapy and, usually, medication in order to treat the symptoms. Many parents are concerned about the possible side effects of ADHD medications, though, especially as the tendency to prescribe it rises. According to the CDC, the number of children aged 4 to 17 taking ADHD medication increased from 4.8% in 2007 to 6.1% in 2011. In some states, like Louisiana, the number is as high as 10%!

For parents who do not wish to give their children mood-altering medication, they have alternatives. Therapy and structured behavior changes are generally recommended, but medication does not have to be a first resort to help children, teens or adults with ADHD adjust. Instead, they can try alternative therapy like chiropractic treatments.

While it may sound surprising, chiropractic care has been shown to demonstrably reduce the severity and frequency of adverse ADHD-related behaviors. Learn more about how chiropractic for ADHD can help and the scientific evidence behind it by reading on.

Scientific Studies Show Promise of Chiropractic Care for ADHD

Using a chiropractor for ADHD may seem like an unconventional approach, but the data is there. Published in the peer-reviewed alternative medicine journal Explore, “The chiropractic care of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a retrospective case series” reviews treatment of four patients diagnosed with ADHD, aged 9 to 13 years old, over a period of at least five months. All subjects underwent clinical interventions that involved spinal adjustments and nutritional supplements.

During the treatment, parents, and teachers regularly filled out a 15-item questionnaire aiming to reveal ADHD-related behaviors within the subjects and track possible changes. A Friedman test analysis was applied in order to compare observations by different people concerning the same subject.

By comparing the questionnaires throughout the treatment period, researchers were able to discern a clear, significant trend of improvement in ADHD symptoms and related behaviors. They wrote that “this provides supporting evidence on the benefits of chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy. We encourage further research in this area.” Although the study was uncontrolled and involved subjective criteria, the clear and consistent pattern was considered compelling.

A larger study review concerning 157 children, both male and female, found similar results. Although the children initially presented “difficulties in reading, learning, social interaction and school performance,” the chiropractic interventions caused a number of the children to display “improvements in eight psychometric tests and 20 areas of cognitive function compared with their values before the treatment.”

Possible Chiropractic Care Regimens for Children

Chiropractic adjustments aim to improve nervous system functioning, which can lead to a greater coordination between the body and mind as well as reduced systemic stress. These factors combined could possibly be behind the improvements seen in ADHD subjects following chiropractic treatment.

By bringing their sensations in alignment and reducing bodily obstruction, discomfort and pain the child may find distracting, children are often able to achieve greater focus and express fewer outbursts of emotional distress.

If your child or someone in your family, including yourself, suffer from diminished productivity and behavioral problems as a result of ADHD, consider using chiropractic care as an element of your treatment. You can schedule an appointment today to work with your doctor, diagnose your full physiological condition and develop a care plan that could just bring you the relief you desire.
