5 Ways to Avoid Unnecessary Back and Neck Pain

Thousands of Americans every year suffer from pain in their backs and necks. The causes are myriad: accidents, injury, illness, even tossing and turning in your sleep can be reasons for these issues. There are, however, concrete things you can do to avoid straining your neck and back, and to keep these pains at bay. Follow these 5 tips to avoid unnecessary back and neck pain.

Lifting Properly Spares Back and Neck Pain

You’ve probably heard the expression, “Don’t lift with your back.” This is very true. When you lift heavy objects, you should exercise the right procedures in order to avoid back and neck pain. Never bend over to pick something up. Instead, squat. Use your legs to bear the weight, tighten the muscles in your abdomen and keep the object close to your body as you lift.

Avoid Twisting

Our bodies are constructed with an incredible range of motion, but not all motions are intended for use constantly. Any time you can avoid twisting at the waist, you could be sparing yourself pain and injury in the lower back. Rather than twisting, simply turn your whole body. If you start to notice tightness in your back, stop what you’re doing and take a rest.

Sleep Right

This might require some experimentation on your part, but try to find a position when sleeping that is comfortable and doesn’t put stress and strain on your back and neck. Your doctor or chiropractor may have recommendations in this area, but everyone is different.

You’ll need to focus heavily on what is the most comfortable for you and use your best judgment. Do you notice strain on your back when you lay in a common position? Change positions! The key is to both be comfortable and have your body completely relaxed while sleeping.

Live a Healthy Life

This is generally good advice all around, but eat a healthy diet, keep as close to your ideal weight as possible and drink eight glasses of water per day. Dehydration is one of the biggest (and most common) enemies the human body faces. If you’re not properly hydrated, your body is far more prone to injury. Likewise, you’re more likely to hurt yourself if you’re full of sugars and unhealthy food, and if you’re over or underweight.

Be Active

Part of a healthy lifestyle includes lots of exercises such as stretching and yoga, which train your body to maintain its flexibility. Don’t sit for extended periods of time; get up and move around. Visiting a chiropractor is another excellent addition to your healthy lifestyle. A chiropractor can address burgeoning issues in your neck and back, keep your spine in proper alignment and even help with your recovery processes.
