Tips to Boost Your Child’s Immune System

With cold weather and even snow quickly taking over the Woodbridge area, children are become more susceptible to sickness-causing germs. The cold begins to weaken the immune system, and influenza and other viruses are zooming through the air. And with so many children packed into school buildings and buses, it’s only a matter of time before colds are spread around.

Encourage your children to wash their hands more often. Sure, you taught them during potty-training that hand washing is the last step, and even that may need some reinforcing. Note that regular soap works just as well, if not better, than antimicrobial soaps.

Eating and Sleeping

What we put into our bodies directly affects how well different systems work. If your child is getting nothing but processed foods, their immune systems will suffer. Fresh and frozen vegetables are pretty cheap and are packed full of essential vitamins and minerals. If your child is picky, mix things up with options like a fruit and Greek yogurt smoothie.

After a long day of school, practice, homework and other stressors a young child faces, they need a good night’s sleep. For younger children, this means about 10 hours a night. Tweens and teens need about 8-9 hours. Anything less and their immune system could be compromised more readily.
