3 Tips for a Strong Back

Whether you are a body builder who essentially has their own apartment in the gym or simply someone who likes to play with their kids, having a strong back is essential to everyday life. Mistreating it could cause issues such as pulled muscles, spinal subluxations and the like. As most people likely know, once back pain sets in, it can throw off your entire schedule and lifestyle, at least temporarily. Here are three ways you can avoid back pain in Woodbridge and maintain a strong spine.

Watch Your Posture

Your spine is responsible for holding your body upright. As such, it is designed to carry your weight a certain way. When you spend all day at work, sitting (slouching) in your chair, your back takes the brunt of the punishment. Be sure to maintain proper posture at all times. Sit upright, with your elbows at a 90-degree angle if you are working. If possible, stand while you work. If not, be sure to stand up and walk around regularly.

Your sleep habits also affect your posture. While it may be most comfortable to sleep on your back or stomach, doing so can cause your spine to curve unnaturally. Rather, sleep on your side, almost in a fetal position, with a pillow between your legs. This accentuates the natural curvature of the spine, allowing it to decompress.

Cut Out the Bad Habits

Quick, think back to your last meal. Was it healthy, wholesome food, or something quick and processed? It’s no secret that eating junk food is highly unhealthy for you. But did you know that carrying extra weight in your abdomen can put a strain on your back? You naturally lean forward from the weight, and then to compensate, there is a swaying back motion, which is harmful to the spine. One of the best ways to get a strong back is to cut the junk food and lose the extra weight.

Another bad habit that wreaks havoc on the spine is smoking. Many people believe that e-cigarettes are healthier than regular tobacco ones, but any form of nicotine damages the disks in the spine. The nicotine dehydrates them, making them more vulnerable to tearing. Kick the nicotine habit once and for all if you want a strong back.
