If you experience chronic back pain, both exercising and losing weight can help alleviate your discomfort.

Pain in the rib cage is a different story. You should first identify what is causing the pain. If it is a bruised rib or a pulled muscle, a cold compress can help reduce swelling and discomfort. If this does not alleviate the symptoms, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications can be of use. If your pain is from a broken rib, be sure to visit the doctor. While ribs tend to heal on their own in about six weeks, a doctor will make sure your internal organs are not damaged.

When Home Remedies Don’t Work

If your back pain is severe or chronic, it may be time to see a chiropractor. You may also want to make an appointment if you’ve tried everything, but your moderate back pain just won’t go away. An experienced chiropractor may find the source of the pain and alleviate it. Often this is done through spinal alignments. Modalities like cold laser therapy or pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy may be necessary for more serious cases.

If you have had chronic discomfort in your rib cage, it can be a sign of a misaligned spine. Certain vertebrae will send pain signals to different parts of the body, including the chest, if they are out of line.
