From the way we sit at the office to the way we sleep, there are many things we can do in efforts of preventing neck pain. Some people find themselves in front of a computer leaning forward, no low back support, slumped over and with their shoulders raised high up in the air. Well if you are doing this right now, it’s time to check yourself because your poor posture could be contributing to that pain in the neck. First things first, check your desk, your chair, and your computer. Make sure your monitor is at eye level, your knees slightly lower than your hips, and use those arm rests. Be sure to take frequent breaks and stretch. Consult with an ergonomic specialist if necessary; its money well spent. When you’re on the phone, are you tucking the phone between your ear and shoulder? Either break the habit or it’s simply time to get a headset.
What about you’re sleeping patterns? Are you a stomach or side sleeper? These positions put unnecessary stress on your neck. Yes, it is true that sleeping on your back is best and buying the proper pillow may help. Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that are overlooked. There are many different types of pillows, make sure to choose the right pillow for the curvature of your neck. Note when buying a new pillow, the curvature is quite different from the amount of firmness in the pillow. The general rule of thumb is medium firmness for back sleepers and more density for side sleepers. Buying a new pillow shouldn’t be a “pain in the neck”, you may have to try several to determine the right one for you.
