Vertebrae of the Week: Vertebra T6
Your T6 vertebra protects the nerve root that allows your brain to communicate with your stomach. As you can imagine, this has far reaching effects on the rest of your body, and while it’s protected by the ribcage, it can still be subject to stenosis, injury or degeneration, resulting in localized weakness or sensations of pain. It’s located close to the stomach in your body, and as such you may notice stomach problems if it becomes subluxated.
The issues most commonly associated with a T6 subluxation include dyspepsia, heartburn, and nervous stomach.
Dyspepsia is more commonly known as indigestion. It presents as chronic, often severe, pain in the upper abdomen combined with sensations of nausea, bloating, belching and heartburn. Most people associate it with simply having eaten something that didn’t agree with them, but it can also be caused by pressure on the T6 nerve due to a vertebral subluxation.
Heartburn manifests as a burning behind your breastbone in your chest, sometimes reaching down into your stomach and abdomen. It’s caused by excess stomach acid that backs up and touches your mouth and esophagus—as such, it’s quite literally a burning sensation. This pain can sometimes radiate all the way up into the throat or jaw areas.
Usually, when people experience heartburn, they seek treatment via over the counter medications or prescription meds from their doctor. However, chiropractic adjustment can remove pressure on the nerve caused by a spinal subluxation, and this can help to counteract the effects of the process of degeneration. In short, it can alleviate the symptoms of heartburn and help make sure it doesn’t come back.
