Vertebrae of the Week: T1 Vertebra

Many people aren’t aware of this, but your T1 vertebra is the same thing as your C7 vertebra. It’s located right at the base of your neck, and forms both the last vertebra of your cervical region, and the first of your thoracic spine. These bones are very unique, because they attach to and articulate with your ribs. Your first thoracic vertebra, or T1, is the beginning of an important part of your body, and subluxations can cause all manner of problems.

T1 Vertebra Symptoms

If you have a subluxation, a misalignment in the T1 vertebra, you can experience irritation in the nerves of the disc, of the facet joints, and the spinal nerves that radiate out from the spine. This can result in pain around your mid-back, around your sides, and even into your chest. This chest pain can vary from a dull ache, to a crushing, stabbing or burning pain. It should be noted that any time you experience a sudden chest pain, pressure, tightening or squeezing, you should immediately call 911 and get to a hospital.

Other symptoms of a T1 misalignment can include those related to nerve impulses that travel down your arms, particularly below the elbow. This can include tendonitis-like symptoms related to bursitis, as well as pins-and-needles, numbness and pain in your hands, wrists and fingers. You can also experience problems with your esophagus and trachea which can include pain or difficulty breathing as well as coughing and asthma-like symptoms.
