The beginning of a new year is an exciting time, full of new goals, dreams and opportunities. Every January we are reminded to either continue down the right path or to change directions. Most people do a little of both.
Starting the year off in the right direction and with reasonable goals is the only way to maintain the changes throughout the entire year and the rest of your life. Most New Year’s resolutions are abandoned within the first four weeks. Most resolutions or goals fail because they are too lofty and will become difficult to follow through with.
Make two lists. On the first list, set several goals that can be obtained in a short period of time. On the second list, put your long term goals; these can be life goals that can be both personal and professional. Place these lists somewhere close so that you will be forced to look at them every day. The more often you see your goals, the more they will be reinforced. Mark off the goals as you reach them. After you have reached all of these first goals, set a new group of goals that will require more time and effort to achieve, keeping in mind your long term goals. Repeat the same process as you did with the first group. All of the goals should progressively require more effort to obtain. Celebrate the goals you reach and continue striving for your life goals.
Take the time to pick your goals carefully and revisit them on a regular basis. Setting appropriate goals will help get you to the place that you want to be in life no matter what they are. Enjoy the New Year and all the chances for change and growth. Allow yourself to celebrate your achievements, but don’t let your success derail your upcoming goals!
