Cervical C1 Vertebrae (Atlas) | Headache Pain
Did you know that headache pain can be the result of a C1 vertebral misalignment? The C1 is your first cervical vertebra of your spine. C1 is named “the atlas” because it supports the bottom sphere of your head. It is so unique because it is held in place by muscles and ligaments and not by a vetebral disc. The atlas-occipital joint is the area where your head rests on the atlas. If this joint becomes injured or misaligned, it is quite possible that brain-stem and spinal cord stress may occur. Your C1 vertebrae is the master control for your entire nervous system.
C1 – It’s the “HOLY GRAIL OF VERTEBRA” as Dr. C puts it!
Misalignment of the atlas can affect your ENTIRE body; this is called an atlas subluxation. Since C1 is the gateway to your brain-stem, an atlas subluxation can cause a host of problems including headaches, migraines, high blood pressure, insomnia, colds, nervousness, and dizziness just to name a few! Many patients who receive regular chiropractic adjustments get substantial relief from headaches and migraines.
Don’t just think this is specific to adults! Subluxation of C1 is extremely common in newborns caused by the trauma of birth. Babies having colic or acid reflux are a good example of problems that can occur.
Misalignment of your C1 vertebra can also affect the following structures, organs, or functions:
- Pituitary gland
- Parts of the brain
- Bones of the face
- Inner and middle ear
